What to Look For - From ANY Club Program

When looking at a club program, here are some questions to ask.

  • What's included in the fee?
Are all league fees, rental of practice facilities, uniforms, coach’s fee? If the team travels out of state are airfare and hotel included? While out of state will transportation be provided and is that included? When the team is out of state are meals included? If so; how many? Is there a parent chaperone or other responsible adult in addition to the coach? Is it possible that additional tournaments will be added later and if so are they optional or required to participate in and is there an additional fee?
  • Who evaluates at a tryout? How are players divided among team?
Are there multiple coaches from different schools? Do they utilize coaches not familiar with players that played last year so they are objective? Are teams formed with equal talent?
  • What are team rules about missing practices?
Is it a problem? Do they sit the next game? How do coaches handle players who are on other sport teams (like soccer and baseball)?
  • Do they have liability insurance or background checks? What protections are in place? Do they perform background checks on their coaches?
  • How are Coaches selected?
Is the organizer the coach? If so, how do they focus on coaches versus the administrative tasks of registering for tournaments and planning travel? What is the reputation of the coach? What if coach is ill or must step down during the season? Are there other coaches to help out? How does the program handle "no Sunday coaching" (For current High School coaches, they cannot be in contact with high school players on Sundays in March, April and May per state CHSAA rules)?
  • How do they communicate changes?
If practice or games change, how are families notified? Are they notified quickly? Does someone answer a phone? Are emails answered in a timely fashion?
  • How do they handle conflict? suggestions?
Who does parent call to answer concerns about coaching? schedule? How does a family give feedback for improvements or suggestions? Do they send out surveys to the parents and coaches?
  • Why is the program forming teams?
Is the program going to be here next year? Is there a relationship (child, best friend's child, etc.) between coach and player? Is the team formed just to give one or two players a place to play? If so, is the team balanced in skills around these specific players? Will play time be fair?
